Have you ever felt losing your mind when setting up security camera system or connecting DVR/NVR to the internet? Whenever you meet those terms that you wonder what do they mean actually?
Usually when you are using a computer, you can easily access the internet whenever plug in the ethernet cable then it is automatically connected.
However, when the network goes wrong or a little hiccup occurs, here comes the trouble. I bet most of you have no way of solving it, don’t even know where the problem comes from, not the slightest clue.
The thing is that how could you possibly know how to solve the problem when you don’t even have a conception of those terms and network basics?
Now let’s do some computer network studying, to help you comprehend the following terms in a completely explicit way for you can have an idea of how the camera system works and have a good grasp of ZOSI security camera system.

IP and MAC
Now we basically use the ipv4 protocol, the so-called IP is the number of your computer’s whole network. Other computers need this number when they want to access the computer.
But this number has been changing in many cases. The only constant is your MAC address: physical address.
Metaphorically, you often move, and you have an address every time you move, #XX, XX St, XX District, this is the IP. But your name does not change along with the IP, this is the MAC, the difference is that MAC does not allow overlaps.
Our IP is divided into two parts: the network part and the host part. The network part is like you are in the town of XX in the XX city which is fixed by the state, but the #XX, XX St, XX District number is determined by the developer himself. The two numbers add up is your IP.
The difference is that in reality the length of the two numbers is fixed but varies on the network.
When connecting the ZOSI NVR security wireless network system, go to NVR’s System Setup – Network Setup to enable “DHCP”, then the system will obtain the IP Address from the Router automatically.
If you have problems in setting up the NVR/DVR Security Network System, you can also go to zositech.com Support Center for help.
FAQ:
- How to connect and set up the NVR Security Wireless Network System?
- How to connect the DVR to the internet?
That’s when a subnet mask is needed to distinguish the length of the number between the network part and the host part.
Subnet Mask
IP address is a 32-bit binary number that is usually split into four ‘8-bit binary numbers, 28 = 256’(4 bytes).
The IP address is usually expressed in the form of (a.b.c.d) in dotted decimal notation.
e.g. IP: 192.168.1.1, each point consists of eight digits. 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000, in which part of 1 representing the IP corresponding length is the network part: 192.168.1. The last eight bits are 0, and the last one is represented as the host part, which is the number assigned internally by the LAN.

Default Gateway (Router)
For example, when your network part is the same, you are in the same LAN, just like you live in the same community.
The ARP(address resolution protocol) is the community management office: IP and corresponding MAC are stored inside the network, the community management office has address (IP) And the corresponding person’s name (MAC). If you want to access that address (LAN communication), you can directly call his name (physical address MAC).
No gateway is needed at this time.
But when we are not in the same community (LAN) you want to communicate, you must forward it through the router, and the router will find the IP you want to contact through the routing table.
In ZOSI DVR’s System Setup – Network page, the Gateway is displayed as above.
Imagine a situation where you want to write a letter with your pen pal, you know his address (IP), then you have to hand over the letter to the post office, the post office of this place has its own number (the gateway). The post office has all the addressed in this nation, and the route to go (routing table), and then passed to one post office through the next one, all the way to your pen pal.
That is how communication accomplish.
DNS Server (Domain Name Management)
When you want to access Google, you can enter Google URL. DNS will automatically convert the URL to IP. The DNS stores the correspondence between the URL and the IP.
For example, each store can go to the Industrial and Commercial Bureau (the organization that manages the domain name) to apply for a unique name.
If you want to go to a store and only know the name of the store (URL), but don’t know Where it is (IP). We enter the store name (URL) on the map (in the network) and the address automatically turns up (IP).
DHCP Server
This server is equivalent to the allocation of accommodation in the community.
Assuming you move to a new community (networking), the community will automatically assign you a residence (automatically assigned), or you can apply for a residence (manually assigned). And how long you can live in this house (lease), all managed by the community allocation office.
When connecting and setting up the NVR/DVR security network system, please go to ZOSI DVR’s System Setup- Main Menu – Setup – Network or ZOSI NVR’s System Setup – Network Setup to check all the terms and information mentioned above.
